Transportation Board Awards Four Contracts Worth $46.7 Million

STAUNTON, Va. – The Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) this week awarded four contracts worth approximately $46.7 million for major infrastructure improvements.
The projects – in the Fredericksburg, Hampton Roads, Lynchburg, Salem and Bristol districts of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) – will improve mobility, enhance safety and extend the life of the state’stransportation network.
The contracts are for projects that will:
  • Extend I-95 Express Lanes in Stafford County in VDOT’s Fredericksburg District
The CTB awarded a $31.1 million design-build contract to Branch Highways Inc. of Roanoke to design and construct a reversible extension of the Interstate 95 Express Lanes at the southern terminus in Stafford County.
The 2.5 mile extension will carry traffic beyond the flyover ramp where the current 95 Express Lanes end, just north of Exit 143 at Garrisonville Road.
This project will help ease congestion and improve safety.
Project completion is expected in August 2018.
  • Repair and waterproof decks for the approach bridges to the Monitor Merrimac Memorial Tunnel Bridge (MMMBT) on I-664 in VDOT’s Hampton Roads District
The CTB awarded a $5.4 million contract to The Truesdell Corporation of Tempe, Ariz. for repairs and waterproofing on decks for the approach bridges to the Monitor Merrimac Memorial Tunnel Bridge on Interstate 664 in VDOT’s Hampton Roads District.
The work will help extend the life expectancy of the structures. Project completion is expected in July, 2019.
  • Provide signal maintenance throughout VDOT’s Southwest Regional Operations area
The CTB awarded a $5.2 million contract to Elite Contracting Group Inc. of Petersburg for signals in VDOT’s Southwest Regional Operations area, which includes the Bristol, Lynchburg and Salem districts.  The contract allows the firm to maintain and repair existing traffic signals and other traffic-control devices and install new signals and devices. Locations for this work will be determined as needed.
  • Provide drainage pipe rehabilitation and replacement in VDOT’s Fredericksburg District
The CTB awarded a $5 million contract to Curtis Contracting Inc. of West Point for drainage pipe rehabilitation and replacement in VDOT’s Fredericksburg District.  Locations for this work will be determined as needed.
The following chart tracks the dollar amount of major contracts the CTB has awarded in calendar year 2016:
In advance of each CTB meeting, VDOT Commissioner Charles Kilpatrick also approves contracts up to $5 million in value. From the March 23, 2016 bid lettings, the commissioner approved 26 contracts worth an approximate total of $36.5 million for construction and maintenance projects on Virginia’s interstates and primary and secondary roads.
Appointed by the governor, the 17-member CTB establishes the administrative policies for Virginia's transportation system. The CTB allocates highway funding to specific projects, locates routes and provides funding for airports, seaports and public transportation. The board normally meets on the third Wednesday of the month in months when action meetings are scheduled.
