VDOT Asks Drivers to Plan for SafeTrack Impacts

FAIRFAX – With Metro’s SafeTrack plan beginning Saturday, June 4, the Virginia Department of Transportation urges all commuters, including those who do not take Metrorail, to prepare for impacts to roads in northern Virginia.
Commuters are strongly urged to consider alternate options such as rideshare, telework or adjusting work schedules. For those who must drive, remain alert to increased congestion and prepare for extended rush hours, as commuters adjust routes and travel methods during each Metrorail line impact.
Commuters are reminded to visit www.wmata.com/safetrack for details on station-specific impacts, links to transit options and local commute alternatives.
The first maintenance surge, June 4 through June 16, which includes single-tracking of the Orange and Silver lines, is expected to have major impacts along surrounding routes such as:
Interstate 66
Interstate 495
Dulles Toll Road
Leesburg Pike (Route 7)
Lee Highway (Route 29)
Lee-Jackson Highway (Route   50)
Chain Bridge Road/Dolley Madison Boulevard
Georgetown Pike
Little River Turnpike
Columbia Pike
Baron Cameron Avenue
Braddock Road
Gallows Road
Sunset Hills Road
Wiehle Avenue
Sunrise Valley Drive

During the SafeTrack surges:
VDOT’s Traffic Operations Center will actively monitor traffic conditions and adjust signal-timing to support extended peak hours and major changes in traffic patterns.
VDOT will limit lane closures for paving, maintenance, construction and permitted work on impacted roads during the day.
As part of Metro’s SafeTrack maintenance work June 4-16, drivers can also expect off-peak impacts to eastbound I-66 near Ballston with alternating lane closures nightly.
