Richmond, VA – At its monthly meeting today, the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) awarded two contracts worth approximately $14.5 million for major infrastructure improvements.
The projects – in the Salem and Fredericksburg Districts of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) – will improve mobility, enhance safety and extend the life of the state’s transportation network.
The contracts are for projects that will:
- Replace two bridges and reconstruct roadway on Route 220 in Botetourt County
The CTB awarded a contract worth approximately $5.6 million to Allegheny Construction Company Inc. of Roanoke for a project to replace two narrow bridges that carry Route 220 over tributaries of the James River in northern Botetourt County. In addition, wider culverts will be constructed and 0.8 mile of roadway between and approaching the culverts will be reconstructed.
Project completion is expected in June 2018.
- Clean and paint the Robert O. Norris bridge on Route 3 in Middlesex County
The CTB awarded a contract worth approximately $8.9 million to M. & J. Painting Company Inc. to clean and paint three center spans on the Robert O. Norris Bridge, which carries Route 3 over the Rappahannock River in Middlesex County. Cleaning and painting the bridge’s center spans will protect its structural steel elements and prevent deterioration and corrosion.
Project completion is expected in June 2018.

In advance of each CTB meeting, VDOT Commissioner Charles Kilpatrick also approves contracts up to $5 million in value. From the April 27 and May 25 bid lettings, the commissioner approved 55 contracts worth an approximate total of $76.7 million for construction and maintenance projects on Virginia’s interstates and primary and secondary roads.
Appointed by the governor, the 17-member CTB establishes the administrative policies for Virginia's transportation system. The CTB allocates highway funding to specific projects, locates routes and provides funding for airports, seaports and public transportation. The board normally meets on the third Wednesday of the month in months when action meetings are scheduled.
